Teaching & Performance


Dr. Shane Monds holds degrees in composition and theory and has studied classical guitar, piano and lute for over twenty years. He teaches private lessons in the Houston area for all ages in composition, guitar (classical or popular styles), piano and music theory tutoring.

He has studied piano and composition since age 12 under dozens of teachers including Drs. Gregory Sioles (piano), Karim Al-Zand (composition), Kurt Stallmann (composition), Anthony Brandt (composition), and Pierre Jalbert (composition). studied classical guitar and flamenco under Dr. Ronaldo Cadeu. He has also played Renaissance lute and archlute (theorbo) for Rice University’s Collegium Musicum.


Shane Monds is an active performer and researcher of North Indian (Hindustani) classical instrumental music. He is recently back from living in Mumbai, India on Rice University’s Wagoner Foreign Research Fellowship where he was doing research, analysis, interviews and documentation of the Etawah-Imdadkhani gharana (style) of sitar and surbahar performance.

He is a sitar student of Abhik Mukherjee, a renowned New York based sitarist, and began his studies under Srinivas Koumonduri. He also studies elementary North Indian voice and tabla under Chandrakantha and David Courtney, respectively.
